Research interests:

Prof. Sam H.-Y. HSU’s research interests involve material design, synthesis, processing, imaging, and spectroscopy as well as energy and environmental applications, aiming to explore fundamental properties and dynamic interactions of organic and inorganic materials for developing efficient energy-conversion and energy-saving processes. He has keen interests in photoinduced charge transfer processes, interfacial electron transfer, electrochemical hydrogen generation, and photoredox reactions for electricity generation, solar fuel production, electrochemiluminescence (ECL), wastewater treatment as well as food waste management. The investigations between material phenomena and device performance rely heavily on experimental and theoretical concepts of energy and environmental engineering, consisting of photophysics, electrochemistry, photoelectrochemistry by utilizing scanning photoelectrochemical microscopy (SECM) imaging, ultrafast transient absorption (TA), time-resolved photoluminescence spectra (TRPL) and so forth. His works have been published in prestigious journals like Nature Material, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Advanced Functional Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, and so forth.

Postdoctoral (Postdoc) and Research Assistant (RA)

1. Working treatment:

(1) The laboratory provides the most competitive salary for each postdoctoral fellow and research assistant;

(2) Outstanding research assistants will have the opportunity to study for a PhD degree at the City University of Hong Kong.

(3) There are currently postdoctoral places funded by the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Committee (ITC), 35,000-45,000 HKD per month.

2. Workplace:

The research assistant or postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by Prof. Sam HSU, and will choose to conduct research work at City University of Hong Kong or in a collaborative group in Shenzhen. Any expenses related to traveling to Hong Kong to interact with the supervisor during the work period will be covered by the supervisor.

3. Recruitment conditions:

(1) Experience in organic or inorganic chemical synthesis is preferred;

(2) Able to independently design and perform related experiments;

(3) Obtain a master's or doctoral degree related to materials, chemistry, electrochemistry, photoelectrochemistry, catalysis, solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and so on;

(4) Preferred to those who have published SCI papers;

(5) Diligent, strong hands-on ability, passionate about research work.

Doctoral Student (PhD)

1. Scholarship:

The doctoral scholarships of the City University of Hong Kong are 19,100 HKD (before passing the PhD qualification examination) and 19,600 HKD (after passing the PhD qualification examination), which will improve every year based on experience. Excluding the monthly self-payment of about 3,708 HKD tuition fees, and dormitory fees of about 4,000 HKD, there is a considerable surplus. Meanwhile, outstanding applicants can also apply to the Hong Kong Government Doctoral Scholarship Program (Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme), and successful applicants can receive 28,400 HKD per month of tuition exemption, and a research travel allowance of 14,200 HKD per year for a maximum of three years.

2. Application requirements:

(1) GPA above 3.5;

(2) IELTS 6.5 or above or TOEFL 79 or above;

(3) Major in materials science, chemistry, physics, environment, and other related fields;

(4) SCI paper publishing experience is preferred;

(5) Hard work and practical, strong practical ability and enthusiasm for research work.
